THE LEICESTERSHIRE FOX Sunday 13th August 2017

The 2017 Leicestershire Fox took place in fine weather at its traditional venue of Willesley Park. The event was won by Scott Wormleighton of Birstall Golf Club. Scott had a two round score of 136 to win by one shot from Jordan Boulton (Notts). Cosby Golf Club duo, James Billingham and John Fairbrother shared third place with 138.

Scott's victory means that the last three Fox winners have all come from Birstall, Jack Merry in 2015 and Steve Sansome in 2016.

SENIOR SILVER FOX Wednesday 9th August 2017

A very wet Wednesday morning greeted this year’s Senior Silver Fox. Following a lot of rain all day Tuesday and overnight into Wednesday, the competition had a few tweaks to allow us to get underway.  A decision was made by Professional Ben and Frazer, Head Green Keeper, to shorten the competition to a 14 hole event playing from the yellow tees, with placing on fairways and green surrounds and with bunkers treated as ground under repair. The competition got under way after an hour and a half delay following an extensive effort by the greens staff, who worked extremely hard clearing standing water on greens to get them fit for play. All reports about the course were  positive. A lot of credit must go to them!

A full field of 80 pairs took part, and we saw some great scores despite the bad weather and difficult conditions. A score of 34 points from visitors Peter Wynn & Ian Nicholson from Glen Gorse was the score of the day, taking the victory on countback from Lewis Burdett from Longcliffe & Alan James from Glen Gorse. A number of 33's made up the rest of the prize positions. The best gross was Tony Hince from Willesley and Ian McAra Longcliffe. Nearest the pin 6th. Marvin Cook, Hinckley, Nearest the pin 16th Steve, Maud Rothley  Thanks to all who played, particularly those early starters who waited in the rain, we hope you enjoyed the carvery meal. Vouchers for prize winners will be sent in the post and the trophy will be engraved with the winners' names.

Hole in one

Members will be pleased to hear that Mike Norris had his first hole in one whilst playing in the Past Captains match at Market Harborough Golf Club on Friday 4th August. It was on the twelfth hole a 147-yard par three.

Mikes comment was, " it hopped twice and went in, I've only been waiting forty years"!

CAPTAINS CHARTY DAY. 21/07/17. IN AID OF HEADWAY the Brain Injury Association

The golf course was in great shape and the weather kind to the players. During the morning a representative from Headway assisted in the selling of raffle tickets and gave first-hand information about the work done nationally by the Charity. The raffle alone raised £631 pounds and due to the generous prize donations from supporters, past Captains and Presidents all proceeds will go to the Charity. On the course, Spencer our Assistant Professional gave help to teams who entered the target golf Competition at the 10th hole. 5 teams equalled a score of 5, the top team, was identified through a card draw winning a fourball donated by Notts Golf Club ( Hollinwell).  The 10th proved a tough challenge on the day but it was tempered by delicious strawberries donated by John Busby and homemade shortbreads donated by Jane Mansfield all served by volunteer Lady Members.

Off the course, if you were feeling brave, a Caricaturist provided his services and again for a donation to the Charity you could have a 4 minute ‘Head’ sketch.

Whilst all this was happening our bar and catering staff prepared for the evening. A representative, John McFaden, from the Leicestershire and Rutland Branch of Headway attended as a guest speaker. John told us about the rehabilitation work the local branch offers for people with a head Injury and to their families. Following the day we have heard from John who felt both overwhelmed and grateful for the enthusiasm and the generosity to the Charity.

We enjoyed an excellent meal, good company and post dinner entertainment was provided by  Comedian Nick Page. The finale to the whole day was the Charity Auction. Ably presided over by club member Tony Iddon, who not only acted as the auctioneer but was responsible for obtaining the numerous Formula One auction items. These were unique purchase opportunities and raised significant funds along with other auction items. Although the final figure has not yet been confirmed, promises add up to approximately £3500. This is a staggering amount and thanks does not seem sufficient to express our gratitude to all the providers and purchasers who made this possible. If you are still to pay this can be done through the office

One item was not auctioned on the day. A four ball at Kingsbarns Golf Links has been kindly donated by David Sephton.  This, to be used between March and October 2018. Full details are on the Clubhouse notice board. If you are interested in submitting a sealed bid please hand to the office or Captains. You have until the end of September to make this incredible opportunity a reality.

We are sincerely grateful to the 25 teams who entered the Captains Charity Day 4 Ball AMAM and to all the sponsors, supporters, volunteers and staff who contributed to a great day of entertainment and golf. You have through your generosity significantly supported our Charity

Thank you
